She’d forgotten just how lovely the night sky here could be. The pyreflies still swarm up from the ruins, pale green and blue streaks dancing across the dusty purple and fading coral of the sunset. The stars are just barely visible, in different constellations here than in Besaid.

Yuna can’t help but smile. The past two days have been…”whirlwind” would be an understatement. Their almost overly dramatic departure from Luca had been crazy enough (trust Brother and Rikku to cook up something like that), and then the ship coming down on Besaid and Rikku’s nose stuck to the window and her shocked, disbelieving expression, and the giggle in her voice and “Yunie, tell me I’m not seeing things!” and Paine’s indignant “What the hell do you mean ‘that’s not Shuyin’?” and that second of breathless, suspended realization as she looked down out the window…
And the feel of Tidus’s arms around her and his breath against her hair, and after two damn years of being lonely and alone and always wondering if she’d find him again, she could have stayed like that for hours, just clinging to him and letting it sink in that this was real.

Unfortunately, there really had been no time for that – there was the welcome-home party, and then it was “Yuna, there’s been some letters for you…” and then Wakka with the blitzball babble, and the constant stream of visitors… and every time they got a second alone, and decided that now would be a good time to take advantage of that privacy and do some catching up, someone ELSE would come stumbling in with yet another interruption. After the fourth or fifth time, Yuna had started to think they were all doing this on purpose. Thankfully, Rikku still seems to be able to read her cousin’s mind, especially when her mood was so easily readable in her expression. She’d suggested taking advantage of the fact that Brother was somewhere between hung over and still drunk, and “borrowing” the Celsius for a little jaunt. Paine had jumped at the idea of being able to actually pilot the thing, of course – Yuna was pleasantly surprised with how good she was at it. Well, except for the first few minutes, which involved a lot of hanging on for dear life and wondering if this was really such a good idea after all – but at least she’d gotten things straightened out before the landing, and the girls had promised to get Brother out of the way long enough to come and pick them up again in a day or two.

So now here they are, watching the sun go down over the ruins, talking sometimes, not about anything important like what happened the day they beat Sin, or what the past two years have been like, but silly little stories that tended to start with “hey, remember when…?” and end with both of them laughing. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she knows they’ll eventually have to handle those conversations, but right now, it’s all reminiscing about the food fight that ended with Lulu turning Waterga on all of them, or the time Rikku managed to get her hands on Auron’s jug of…whatever that stuff was, and got the worst hangover any of them had ever seen. Yuna still hasn’t let her live that one down, come to think of it.

And then there are times like now, where they just sit quietly, wrapped up in each other’s arms, watching the stars come out. His fingers trace lazy circles on her stomach, calluses catching on the smooth fabric every now and then. Yuna sighs and leans her head back against his shoulder, turning slightly and pressing her forehead against his neck. Tidus just smiles and kisses the top of her head.
“This is nice,” she says softly, closing her eyes. He pulls her closer and lifts one hand to run his fingers through her hair.
“No kidding,” he murmurs. “No interruptions.”
“Mmm.” Yuna smiles, then squirms until she’s curled against him, arms wrapped around his chest and her head tucked under his chin. She makes a soft, contented noise, and he laughs a little.
“Comfy?” he asks, fingers trailing up her spine.
“Mm-hmm.” She closes her eyes, letting herself sink into the moment, the cinnamon and seawater scent of his skin and the steady, calming sound of his heartbeat. She wishes she could stop time and just stay like this for as long as possible, but the fact that she can’t is made just a little less aggravating by the knowledge that they have the rest of their lives to spend together. She sighs happily.
“A lot’s changed in the past two years, huh?” he says out of nowhere, and she nods.
“To say the least. Why do you ask?”
“Betcha at least one thing hasn’t changed.” She can hear the smile in his voice. “Bet you’re still ticklish.”

Her squealing laughter echoes over the empty ruins, bouncing off the rocks and broken towers.
