Sanity
For Vincent, some days are worse than others.
He had spent years alone, asleep, without having to deal with other people. Even Hojo had given up and let him be, eventually. Simple persistence had won out over even his curiosity.
Now, though, Vincent found himself in the middle of a group of people who never seemed to stop moving. After so many years of quiet, that really grated on the man’s nerves at times. The constant moving, the soft sound of voices. It made him restless. Made him snappy on the worst days. The days when his demons seemed closest to the surface. The days when it’s obvious to anyone who knows him that there was something unhuman in him.
Those are the days that people tend to avoid him. Everyone comes up with reasons to skirt him, or just leave him alone for the most part. Everyone but Cloud, that is.
Vincent really wasn’t sure if it was because Cloud had his own issues to deal with that he just didn’t notice Vincent’s, or if it was simply because the man honestly didn’t care. He was going with the assumption that it was a mixture of both. He had seen Cloud pause randomly, head tilted as if listening to something distant, seeming unaware he even did it. Who knew what voices the man was hearing? Vincent had his demons, real ones. What demons did Cloud have, and what face did they wear?
Still, there were days when Vincent wished Cloud would see what the others did and leave him alone. Like today. Vincent had already spent most of the day retreating from contact with the others, only to have Cloud seek him out. Did the blond do that just to be irritating?
It hadn’t taken him long to find Vincent, and the older man couldn’t help but snarl at Cloud as he came near. That got a pause, then a slow, speculative look as Vincent bared his teeth in an instinct that wasn’t his but he couldn’t push away.
“That a threat?” Cloud asked. “Or an invitation?”
That drew a startled noise from Vincent, and a curious one from the demons.
Had Cloud just made a pass at them?
“You know, you don’t have to hide in the bowels of the ship. Makes Cid twitchy when you do that. I think he’s afraid your cloak will get caught in something and cause his ship to wreck. Possibly killing us all, but that’s less important than you damaging his ship.”
Vincent snorted, then jolted as Cloud’s hand was on his cheek. Instinct kicked in again, and he sank his teeth, more fangs now, into the thin skin of Cloud’s wrist.
The blond sucked in a sharp breath, eyes focused on Vincent and never showing any of the unease or fear he expected. Instead, there was interest, and he could taste Cloud’s pulse speed up, even through the leather of the glove, a rising thump against his tongue, which made him tighten his jaws to feel it better. Another small sound from Cloud, and then the man grinned.
“Why don’t we continue this, whatever it is, elsewhere?” he said, tugging his arm back slowly and slightly, just enough to pull Vincent slightly off balance as the man refused to give up the grip his teeth had. “I’d really prefer we not cause the Highwind to crash.” There was a flare of interest in Vincent, and he wondered how much Cloud saw, as the other’s grin turned a little feral. It wouldn’t have been too far out of place on his own face.
“I bite back, you know.”
Those words, purred at him in such a low, throaty tone, and Vincent couldn’t help but shiver and give a small growl. Slowly letting go of Cloud, he studied the man, idly licking the blood off his lips. “Is that a threat, or an invitation?” he asked, intentionally mimicking Cloud’s words earlier.
“Come with me and find out.”
With that, Cloud turn and walked off, ignoring the fact he had blood soaking into his glove. It wasn’t dripping yet, but Vincent knew it wouldn’t take long. Almost helplessly, he followed, unable to stay behind with a mystery like that in front of him.
Maybe that’s why Cloud didn’t have an issue with Vincent’s more inhuman parts. He was insane. But he was a very attractive form of insane, and Vincent found that interesting. Not the best of ideas, but he was a former Turk.
And Turks had never been well renowned for their sanity.

Date: 2007-07-01 06:16 pm (UTC)I love how natural and easy this felt. Like, I mean, there was no real angst or does-he-like-me-or-not issues going on; it just felt so obvious and natural for them to get together (which is strange, considering this isn't one of my favorite FF7 pairings or anything). Ah, I hope that made sense ^_^;
Great writing throughout, but some parts really stood out for me: Cloud listening to his demons (I could almost see him, head tilted
like a chocoboand all), Cid worrying more about the safety of his ship than everyone's imminent death, the very matter-of-factly statement about Cloud being insane, and then there's the whole bit with the sexy biting andandand *flails*I loved it!

Date: 2007-07-01 08:36 pm (UTC)I'm glad you thought that, especially given how it isn't your favorite. It means I did a decent job writing the fic.
Cloud would so chocobo headtilt. And Cid, gods, I love Cid to bits and that does seem like something he'd worry about.
Yay, love for my fic. Thank you so very much.

It's always nice to see this pairing. Great job!

Date: 2007-07-02 10:36 pm (UTC)You know Cid's main concern would be his ship.
It was a fun pairing to write, and I do enjoy it. Happy that other people have as well.

Date: 2007-08-11 03:25 am (UTC)I take it Cloud keeps his little talking with the dead thing under wraps, then? Probably for the best, the others would probably start looking into rubber rooms to check both our little inhumans into.
btw, hello from the land of obscurity. All is well, here. How go things from your end?

Date: 2007-08-13 03:35 pm (UTC)Yeah, Vincent likes the crazy of Cloud. It matches his own nicely. And the biting...mmmm, biting.
But, oh, yes, if the others knew, there would be a lot more talks about Cloud's stability.

Date: 2008-01-22 08:11 am (UTC)I like it. :-) I especially like the fact that during most of this exchange Vincent didn't say anything. I mean, a lot of fics featuring Vincent make him a bit too chatty, and I personally thought he's the guy who'd just go "Hm" and then move on. Anyway, just saying in here, it's Cloud who's setting the verbal trap and Vincent getting the bait without verbal responses, and that's pretty much how I see their relationship.
I also like the part where Cloud tugs his wrist back and Vincent moves forward with it. Totally reminds me of the whole "here kitty kitty kitty" concept, and here it's kinda hot. XD And I actually don't think this fic needs a sequel of any sort, although some smex added in the fic itself would be cute. Eh. It's still good. Thank ya for sharing!

Date: 2008-01-22 08:54 am (UTC)Though he's amazingly snarky in the original game. And Cloud and Vincent are hot together. *nods*
Still, glad you enjoyed it, and if you ever make it to Insanejournal, that's where I've set up shop now.
