Power Play
It wasn’t so much that he found her displeasing, but more that his brother had undoubtedly touched her, and that made her used goods. Still, there was something undeniably attractive about her: her daring beauty, her fiery spirit, assets that she did little to hide. All that, plus the fact that she had his brother on something of a leash, wrapped around her little finger.
She was the way to Angelo, the only sure way Marcello had any more. He’d lost any control he’d had over the young Templar the moment his brother had set foot outside the abbey with the strangers bent on chasing Dhoulmagus and restoring order to their tortured world.
Not that Marcello hadn’t thought a little torture might be good for the world. But seeing it destroyed--or controlled--would have put something of a damper on his plans, so he’d followed their exploits with meager interest until he realized that having Angelo gone was not the ecstasy he’d expected it to be.
Smoothing his dark hair back from his face with both hands, he straightened his uniform and stepped back to admire his image in the full-length looking glass. He tilted it ever-so-slightly, checking each angle, undeniably pleased at the thought of her smiling at him across the table. It hadn’t been difficult to convince her to accept his invitation, not after his brother had done something stupid enough to leave her livid. A part of him wanted to know what had happened, how to drive a wedge further between them, to make the woman his.
At a tentative knock, he abandoned his preparations and turned toward the door. “Yes?”
A nervous servant shuffled in, his head bowed, his shoulders hunched. “A Miss Jessica is here to see you, Sir.”
“Don’t leave her waiting, you fool.” Marcello turned to the table set in the corner of his sitting room. Soft light from twin candles at the table’s center sparkled off the fine crystal and china set for two.
“Marcello.” She sounded breathless.
The abbot’s heart quickened as he turned, hand outstretched, to greet her. “Miss Jessica.” He crossed quickly, suddenly fearful she might change her mind.”
“Please, Abbot, call me Jessica.” She looked different, hair normally worn in twin tails hung loose around her shoulders. It shone a glorious red in the failing glow of sun that spilled through the westward window, giving her an almost ethereal glow.
Perhaps she is more than I suspected. Perhaps she was more than a mere investment. Perhaps there was more at stake here than he’d realized.
A flush crept into her cheeks at his touch. His fingers wrapped around hers; he drew her into the room. Dinner was suddenly a mere second-thought as his eyes drank in her beauty, the way the white curve of her breasts rose and fell with each hurried breath.
“Marcello,” he whispered, raising her hand to his lips. “Please, come in. Dinner will be ready in...” The door closed with a nudge from his hip. “No time.”
He twisted the lock while she wandered into the room, taking in the candlelit table, the broad desk and floor to ceiling case filled with leather-bound books. He didn’t miss the way her eyes fell across the bed, nor the way she turned expectantly to look into his eyes.
Loneliness had a strange way of turning strangers into lovers. I’ll chase her until I catch you, brother. After that, all bets are off.
