I am bored and sick (cold) and stuck at home. Share with meeeeeeee!

1. Tell me about a [livejournal.com profile] springkink prompt that you claimed thinking that you had a grasp on it, a vision so to speak. You knew exactly where you wanted to go, only to be derailed by the characters, the plot, your muse, your cat ... You name it! Tell me what happened. Where you able to muddle through it?

2. Tell me about one that just clicked for you. You had an idea, the words flowed and bam, done. Were you happy with the finished product?

And dude really I'm open and easy and dirty. *giggles* If you're writing yuletide, merry_smutmas, whatever... share your progress. I want to read about your writing process. [livejournal.com profile] marksykins share ... pete/patrick yum! *wink*

1. I was so excited to claim "Bleach- Shunsui/Nanao- bondage/opulent settings-velvet couch, satin pillows, silk scarves, and leather gloves- 'Nothing less should touch your skin." Romantic BDSM for one of my favorite pairings! I learned far too late that I cannot write BDSM. At all. I freeze up, terrified of getting it wrong. Not claiming a BDSM prompt again.

2. "Orgasm: The Fifth Noble Truth" was the easiest fic for me to write. I checked out so many books on Buddhism from the library and barely ended up using them at all. I still like how that fic turned out.

Want to hear about the Muraki/Hisoka WW2 prompt I didn't claim, because I knew there was no conceivable way I could do it that month?

You guys are all too indulgent, allowing me to rattle on about this one without having to actually, you know, try to write it!

The prompt was WW2, games, high society, blackout. This is the recipe for an epic; in my brain it went instantly to the bizarre comedy/crossover place. (So I may be about to disappoint you horribly, I'm warning you right now.)

This one features the version of the guys where Hisoka and Muraki have resolved the worst of their differences, and where Muraki's been killed and recruited for the Summons Bureau -- in other words, the version growing out of the last thing I did for [livejournal.com profile] stagesoflove. Muraki's still Muraki, see: he's still doing research and meddling with things he ought not meddle with, and he's figured out how to do a certain amount of time travelling. For technical reasons, he's really the only one who can do said travelling, although he can take people with him when he does it.

So when it becomes necessary to deal with the fissures in reality caused by the activities and continued life of one Tyrone Slothrop, an American stationed in London during the Blitz, he's the only one who can be sent. He and a partner, that is. His usual partner would probably be Watari, but they send Hisoka because (a) Hisoka speaks English; and (b) everyone wants someone sensible in the party.

So they find themselves in London, only there's more of a universe-altering supernatural nature taking place than just the odd affair of Lt. Slothrop. There's an outfit called the White Visitation that's trying to investigate supernatural phenomena. There's general weirdness, and a guy who might be using the V2 rocket as a vehicle for magic. And then, there's our guys' private and self-imposed mission to get to Mrs. Quoad's Evil English Candy stash before Slothrop's presence brings in a V2 and annihilates it, because they want to bring it back as a souvenir for Tsuzuki.

There was going to be a climax involving a game of bridge at a classic English high-society house party. (Thus the working title, "Seven Spades.") There was, if I could manage it, be a bit of a chase sequence involving Rocket Limericks. There was, in other words, practically no possibility that I could have pulled this thing off, however desperately I wanted to try.

Fortunately for my sanity, I was doing a show the very day this one was due to be posted. So there was no way I could claim it. But I'm still more than a little sorry about Tsuzuki and Mrs. Quoad's candy stash, dammit.

And having written all this out in nearly-incomprehensible shorthand, I realize that it will be even less comprehensible if you don't know Gravity's Rainbow, which is the crossover universe. Probably another reason it's a good thing I didn't actually try to write this!

As you can see, it's probably a damned good thing I didn't try to claim this one. Crack!fic from hell; and there's no way I could have written rocket limericks that stand up to Pynchon's.

But I still half-think that somebody should do this. Possibly Pynchon himself, because his is one of the few universes that's weird enough to feel right at home with the YnM universe.

I'm deeply flattered. But as I've just explained a little upthread, you're probably kind of glad I didn't, because the prompt as written clearly called for something kind of dark and glittery, and instead my brain came up with a weird buddies comedy in which Hisoka and Muraki snark at each other, win huge amounts of money playing bridge against aristocrats who don't know what hit them, fight with demons who chant Rocket Limericks, and steal Horrible English Candy to bring home for Tsuzuki. (It's science, they tell each other. They want to see whether he'll actually eat it, and if he does, whether he'll notice there's anything wrong with it.)

I'm not convinced I could have actually written it. And if I somehow had managed it after all, I rather suspect I'd have been the only one who liked it.

You seem to be under the horrible misconception that this is bad thing. Buddies comedy with snarky Hisoka and Muraki is just what the world needs. The world needs it. I need it!

Really, I have to agree with [livejournal.com profile] veleda_k--Hisoka and Muraki snarking at each other can never be wrong, particularly when there's a card game in there as well. Even though I haven't read Gravity's Rainbow in years, the whole thing sounds marvelous. And considering that the last time you went in an unexpected direction with a prompt it turned out "And Not Your Yellow Hair", which I was rereading for the thousandth time just yesterday--

--well, I'll just say that I'm extremely sorry that the world won't get to see this one.

And once again, I fear you are too kind.

I'm sorry not to have been able to grab it -- but then, you must know by now that the odds were always high that I'd have gotten myself all tangled up with it anyway, and it would have wound up as yet another of my forever-in-progress WIPs. Like the AU where I assured everybody that the Muraki/Tatsumi hatesex was coming up within weeks, that was like three or four Christmases ago now. Or the Bookverse thing that I refuse to give up on, but was reduced to posting the opening of in the hopes that one of you guys could tell me what the hell should happen next. Et cetera, et cetera, and on into infinity . . .

WOULD ACCEPT. :D :D

(Prompt is mine -- I lack the capacity to visualise the whole thing myself, but goddamn I want somebody to write that fic. I think the characters would do well in such a location. Must read Gravity's Rainbow. I was thinking more Ishiguro/Powell in terms of settei, although I fear that would lead to a terribly depressing fic.)

I am amused, if concerned, that Watari is Muraki's usual partner. (Tend to think that it would end up with rather too many fascinating explosive experimental fireworks and an extremely idiosyncratic understanding on both parts of the term 'common sense'. ♥)

Date: 2007-11-30 02:58 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] p-zeitgeist.livejournal.com
You know, it doesn't altogether surprise me to hear that was your prompt. It's a great prompt, too: I wish more people had grabbed for it, because it's the sort of thing where I could easily see ten people coming up with ten equally good and utterly different stories from it.

I was thinking more Ishiguro/Powell

That may be one of those fundamental differences between the American cultural default and the U.K. cultural default. This country didn't get trashed during the war, leaving us with nothing in our environment to restrain the general cultural tendency toward the glittery surface -- the Good War! London! Bad guys in black uniforms!! There are ways in which I actually know better, and it still would never, ever have occurred to me to go in the Ishiguro/Powell direction. Although I'd damned well want to read it if anyone else wrote it.

I am amused, if concerned, that Watari is Muraki's usual partner.

I have to think you're right about the questionable aspects of pairing these two. But there are forces pushing in that direction. Watari and Muraki actually like each other, in that sense of enjoying each other's company and thinking each other's jokes are funny, and Watari doesn't have a formal partner. And, what are the options? You could expand Tsuzuki and Hisoka's territory, and have him work with them, but given the other associations between the three, adding one more is likely to make others in the office uneasy (by which I mean, mostly, that Tatsumi would object violently). You can't pair him with Tatsumi: the office needs Tatsumi in that secretary role, and besides, they dislike each other too much to be an efficient team. You can't separate Terazuma and Wakaba; even if you could separate Saya and Yuma no one would let either one of them work with Muraki; et cetera, et cetera. So Watari it is, unless and until someone overrules Tatsumi about the appropriateness of letting him work with Tsuzuki and Hisoka. Or unless and until the cost of the explosions and the multiplier effect on their general disregard for procedure and what other people think of as common sense overrides Tatsumi's desire to keep him away from Tsuzuki.

Now I'm tempted to go and post an excerpt from Gravity's Rainbow, but I suspect I can't find anything short enough that would give you a sense of the book. It's not the world's easiest read, but I have a feeling you in particular might like it. The Rocket Limericks -- dude, the Rocket Limericks defy any attempt at description. You can only encounter them for yourself.

I see what you mean there. Although, I think it has at least as much to do also with my tendency to make everything I write REALLY DEPRESSING, and your strange and fascinating habit of writing plot and games and solutions and /life/ out of a fundament of dead people. (s'one of the reasons I never got that into YnM, I think - what's the point of writing depressing stories about dead people who are demonstrably more fucked up than I could ever make them? And besides, Dorian already has that angle covered.)

-
^^ I'll get it out of the uni library and have a go reading it on the eight-hour train journey home in a couple of weeks. It sounds like a thing that would benefit from a concentrated period of nothing-to-but-READ.

There was this Hakkai/Gojyo prompt I claimed for the summer round (which I think someone else wrote last round) which was the futuristic AU one... and I was really sure I knew what I was doing with it. I've actually written loads of it. It's still sitting on my computer. The problem was, I couldn't make it finish. It just... kept on going. On, and on, and on.

(I just finished writing for a tenipuri holiday exchange, heh. I couldn't get my ideas together, started writing in the last week, and ended up sitting there and just writing and writing until I had nine thousand words and the most plot I've produced in a year. For a smutfic exchange. I obviously have some kind of curse going on -- the more smut the exchange/challenge calls for, the less I seem able to write it. And when I wrote for a genfic exchange I had to produce an alt version of the story because two characters really, really wanted to have sex. I give up! XD; )

I've come down with a horrible head cold, and misery loves company, so...

1. I thought I had this brilliant idea for the October 31, FF7 pre-game, Vincent, "polluted aristocracy" prompt. I started it on at least four separate occasions, and each time it was this drippy, broody, roiling Harliquinesque horror that is never going to see the light of day. Ever. I just posted to the discard thread about it a few minutes ago.

2. The one that clicked. Oddly for me, not a FF7 one, though they all flowed fairly easy, especially the Zack/Cloud reverse striptease fic, "Put It On." The Cloud/Reno phone!sex one, "Intercourse," was fun as well.

But, the one that popped into my head fully written, and all I had to do was hurry up and type it was the Sam/Dean Supernatural fic, "No Accounting For Taste" (http://community.livejournal.com/springkink/408002.html). 1,111 words, I wrote it in less than 45 minutes. When I went back to edit it a few hours later, I couldn't find any mistakes: not a typo, not a misspelled word, misplaced comma, same words too close together, nothing. The way it appears in the posting is the exact way it came off my fingers without a single, solitary change. I must have gone back to edit it seven or eight times, as I always do, and never did change a damn thing. Never had that happen before. I've since posted it all over the place, and it's gotten great reviews and recs, lots of comments about how well the characterizations were done, how well canon was woven into the story, and how dark and tragic it is.

And it was my first Supernatural fic, so go figure. *shrugs*

The best part about being more of an artist than a writer is that I don't have to worry too much about a prompt being claimed before I get a chance to do it. So I made a big list of all the prompts that looked inspiring, but didn't make the claim for a particular prompt until I'd gotten the piece done. :) You could probably look through the comments on the claim posts and figure out exactly what day and time I got each of them done. XD

I'm not entirely sure what I'd have done if something did manage to get two claims before I finished it - probably email it to the person whose prompt it was after the reveal, and then wait a few weeks before posting it to my LJ and DeviantArt space, so as not to step on the toes of the people who claimed it.

ETA: Got my Yuletide fic done and uploaded! *gloats obnoxiously* Haven't started on my [livejournal.com profile] yuletart and [livejournal.com profile] renji_rukia exchange pieces yet, though. I really ought to do that.

Even better, doing [livejournal.com profile] yuletide having never written fanfic except for an anonymous entry to one of the many anon kinkmemes out there XD before. I decided to do that because two of the fandoms nominated were the self-published comics that [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija wrote and I drew, so I figured it would be sort of funny-yet-nifty for someone to receive "fanfic" by the artist. Plus, I had an entire plot outline in my head for a story set in the one I offered.

Naturally, that was not what I matched on. But for reasons I can't go into now without potentially revealing info about the fandom and recipient I ended up with, All was Well and I was able to write something that I think will be acceptable. :D

I went for [livejournal.com profile] yuletart and the Ren/Ruki exchanges because I had so much fun with [livejournal.com profile] springkink. :D

1. A DNAngel fic for the July round of Springkink: 'Daisuke/Dark: Wings - Is this sex or mastubation?'
Thought I knew just what to do with this, then as the due date got closer and closer I realized I had no words on paper and Daisuke was panicking over how he would even get into that kind of situation in the first place. Started it three times before I got something workable and eventually ignored Daisuke's complaints and took Dark's suggestion instead (i.e. went straight on to the smut and stayed happily oblivious to the rest of it).

2. An FFVII/Trigun crossover for the last round of Kinkfest on IJ: Zack/Wolfwood: Drinking together - Sometimes, while waiting for others, it's nice to have a drink.
A rather unusual crossover, but it pinged me so hard I damn near 'oh yes'd!' in the middle of the library. The whole idea pretty much wrote itself for me almost before I'd claimed it, and I'm now working on a mini sequel. *bangs head on wall*

And my Yuletide is written in my head but not on paper, so there's not much to discuss thus far (I find the transition process tends to involve far more angst than it really should so I'm waiting for end-of-term pressure to slack off a little first:P).

Hope you're feeling better soon!

1.) That would be the Org XIII/Riku prompt which I still haven't finished. I thought I had the story mapped out- I thought I knew what was going to happen.

Then the characters decided 'no, it needs to be longer'.

I'm working on it though~! I think I've hit a new breakthrough that'll help me along. ^^

2.) This one is the Draco/Bowen prompt I picked up on a whim. I saw it on the unclaimed prompts list, snatched it up, wrote it in four hours right then and there. XD

I made myself not participate in the last SK round, because I was doing original fiction and NaNo and signed up for Yuletide, and to avoid temptation, I didn't even look at the lists. But THEN you went and reopended the prompt submissions for next time, so I let myself look, and damnit, I can already see at least five I want to go for. XD

This entire month of November has mostly been an exercise in getting my NaNo to its real plot rather than the world-building and character development that I can ramble endlessly with for days. *g* I like it, though; I'm really happy with where it's going, what it's doing, to the point where I haven't even looked at my Yuletide prompts beyond a cursory "I'm going to do [X] and maybe a bit of [Y]."

Out of curiousity, does the prompt-submission post have its comments screened? I seem to remember that was the practice before, and uh. I'm making a list and would feel embarrassed if my excess was visible to the world. XD

1. This was actually on IJ, but it was posted for both rounds. It was FF9, Beatrix/Garnet, D/s play, "show me how you want me to obey." I wrote that goddamn fic six separate times and hated all of them. Ultimately I failed at it, and felt terrible.

2. A prompt for FF6, Celes, "enhancements: sensory differences, as a Magitek Knight." I sat down and suddenly there were 2600 words there and I love the entire thing. :D

Oh, I could go on for HOURS >:D. Easiest to write recently had to be my sole Heroes effort to date, Truth (http://community.livejournal.com/flyingpetrellis/129093.html), Petrellicest at that. Just sat there and wrote it out in one go; 1111 words.

But for abandoning? Oh lord. Well, first there's the yaoi_challenge prompt I took, for a Transformers/Doctor Who crossover. Why in god's name I thought I could finish that AND my springkink lot, I don't know.

And so far, in Springkink, I've always had mistakes; I'm proud that I managed to beat the Cardcaptor Sakura prompt to death and get a fic out of it, but ouch, the Legacy of Kain fic I wrote for this round was *bad*, and I had to drop the other Legacy of Kain fic prompt.

On the other hand I wrote a lot of Kingdom Hearts prompts all of a sudden XD, so that wasn't so bad.

At the minute? Main effort would have to be NaNoWriMo. I'm at 48000 words and exhausted, but trudging over the finishing line, and I both love and hate the fic to pieces XD. Can't wait to post it over on my journal but at the same time the thought of doing so makes me feel a bit physically ill. NaNo is DRAINING. Never again XD, Springkink is much, much, much friendlier.

The October round in general just about killed me, because it seemed like all the fics insisted on being long. D: In particular Junkyard Wars and The Treaty of Amsolis - and the latter featured my OT3, so that was really frustrating. XD In April, I have no idea what possessed me to write Sora/Riku/Kairi when I haven't even played KH2 yet.

The easiest for me was Silver. I wrote that out in about a couple hours in my notebook at work. Actually, as I recall, it was one of the first fics I wrote that round and the first I finished. Nobody can stop Sephiroth's issues. XD

Coming (*brick'd*) in at a close second was Marquis de Air Commander, to no one's surprise. Although I did have an excuse to rewatch Triple Takeover so I could get Astrotrain and Blitzwing in my head.

I have to agree. Both my Supernatural fic and my Petshop of Horrors fics were first-time efforts in those fandoms for me. Ahahaha. *facepalm*

I'm actually writing for yuletide and smutmas, along with the pete/patrick. :D Smutmas is done, and that was a nightmare for me. I finished writing one fic then decided I hated it and it was too not my request, but I might rework it for another time. The one I started later is closer to what my recipient wanted. I hope. Yuletide...haha. I'll probably write it this weekend?

Pete/Patrick has grabbed onto my heart and tugged. It's ridiculous the amount of time I'm spending happily watching YouTube videos or reading Pete's various blogs, especially since it's RPS and I've never been in a RPS fandom before! Strange, all around, but hard to resist because Pete just kind of lays it all out there. Lots of the bandom boys do. And writing my fic was easy. 1. Well I saw the prompt for this:Gonou/Kanan: Incest - "Remembrance. Lanterns and fireflies." (http://community.livejournal.com/springkink/418079.html#cutid1)and I knew where I wanted how I wanted it to go ... then I saw that the brilliant and genius [livejournal.com profile] incandescens had picked up the same prompt and I very nearly dropped it like a hot potato.

Indeed when I picked up all the prompts I had some time to spare and then the children got sick and the parents in law decided to spring a visit and thankfully I managed to write them all but this last one it got to the night before posting and I thought "siddown girl and just write the damn thing!"

2. The one that was so much fun with and more or less wrote itself was this (http://community.livejournal.com/springkink/405720.html#cutid1)... and how could I not have fun with it.

and lastly;

... way back when I joined I saw in the first round (at least I think I did) a Saiyuki one with an odd pairing: Goujun and Rasetsunyo, I can't even remember what the prompt was and later when I looked I think I may have dreamt it. ^__^ ANyways that sparked ideas in my head and one day it may come to something. It's an idea for a gift fic for someone on my f-list. If anything comes of it I will be sure to give you a shout. ^__^

Off topic, but Huuuuuughes. ^_^ Good grief, that man brings out the squee in me.

On topic: I tried to write for one of the prompts but I got derailed bigtime because the story wanted to go in two different directions. Trying to tie them together would have been interesting, though, and might have worked. I didn't pursue it very hard because I'm tied up with school most of the time (for the moment, anyway). Hopefully sometime I'll finish it, though it wil be way too late for this comm.

(OH, BTW, the prompt I chose was Galvatron/Arcee weapon fetish.)
